Wellness Programs

As part of the holistic hospice philosophy, we offer a variety of wellness programs at no cost for people living with a terminal illness, caregivers, family members, and those grieving the loss of a loved one:

Cooking for One

Our monthly Cooking for One class will help teach you practical skills for shopping and cooking while connecting with others in a safe and comfortable environment.

Guided Meditation

Begin your week with a half hour of guided meditation, followed by mindfulness exercises and discussion.

Step by Step Walking Group

Step by Step is a calm-walking group providing an opportunity to revitalize our bodies and enjoy nature. Meeting on a weekly basis from May through October, a volunteer leader will guide you on gentle walking paths, and from time to time a theme will be introduced as a reflection as you walk.

Finances Made Simple

Finances Made Simple is a three-week program designed to assist you in reducing financial stress by building your confidence and organizing your financial affairs.

Complementary Therapies

St. Joseph’s Hospice offers a variety of complementary therapies in our Wellness Centre or in the comfort of the homes of individuals living with a terminal illness. Therapies offered through Hospice may include:

  • Massage Therapy
  • Reiki
  • Reflexology
  • Therapeutic Touch
  • Hair Care and Esthetics

Each therapy is delivered by trained Hospice volunteers who are certified in their respective treatment(s). All of our complementary therapy services are offered at no cost to those we serve.

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy utilizes direct contact by kneading the muscles and joints to improve circulation, range of movement, decrease minor muscle pain and help overall relaxation.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress relief and relaxation. A Reiki therapist uses a light touch to activate the natural healing processes of the client’s body to aid with physical and emotional well-being.

Reflexology is a focused pressure technique, usually directed at the feet or hands. It is based on the premise that there are reflexes on different parts of the body that correspond to other parts, glands, and organs. Reflexology can promote stress relief, enhance circulation, and support a healthy metabolism.

Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch was developed by nurses for stress relief and relaxation. Like Reiki, it is an energy-focused therapy in which the practitioner uses their hands as a focus to facilitate the healing process; however, direct touch is not necessary. Therapeutic touch aims to direct the flow of energy to aid with physical and emotional well-being.

Hair Care and Esthetics

Hair care and esthetic services are offered to our clients throughout their palliative journey. Hair services are offered to those living with an a terminal illness either in our wellness centre, spa or in clients’ homes. Esthetics are offered in our wellness centre or spa.

Our licensed volunteer hair stylists provide a wash, cut and hairstyle. Our licensed volunteer estheticians provide services such as manicures and pedicures.
